The AppleTalk checkbox turns on the AppleTalk protocol in BeOS networking. This support for AppleTalk is provided to allow printing to networked PostScript printers, which frequently use the AppleTalk protocol to communicate print jobs over the network.

The AppleTalk implementation in the BeOS does not currently allow you to log into AppleShare servers, nor does it allow you to publish your system as an AppleShare server. It is strictly (at this time) for printing.
