What printers work with the BeOS?
The BeOS currently only supports three kinds of printing:
- Direct Ethernet to an Apple Laserwriter compatible. Direct meaning no servers or spoolers between your computer and the printer. The printer must also be in the same AppleTalk zone, and compatible with the "generic" Apple Laserwriter 8 driver in the MacOS. We do support printer bridges like hardware Localtalk bridges or Apple's LocalTalk/LaserWriter Bridge software bridge. There are countless printers that fit this category, so we honestly don't track which ones specifically are known to work.
- HP LaserJet (PCL-3)-compatible printers connected via the parallel port. If your printer is not PCL 3 compliant, it will not work until your printer manufacturer writes a driver.
- There is also support for some Epson Stylus printers. The tested models are Epson Stylus...

What no 700, 740 or 770? We know, but we're doing this because the Epson isn't. Expanded support really needs to come from the manufacturer, and we're working on filling the gap until then.
The BinkJet Printer Driver enables printing to HP DeskJet 850, 855, and 870 inkjet printers, but is not supported by Be, Inc. The BinkJet driver comes to you from Clarkwood Software on BeDepot.
For other brands and types of printers, the best option for you at this time is contacting the printer manufacturer and expressing your interest in a driver for the BeOS.
