My ATI card isn't working

Situation:

  • Some ATI cards freeze when trying to drag a window.
  • Some ATI cards will not boot to color (accelerated video) mode.
  • Some cards are getting video artifacts in the color mode.

This happens most often on ATI Rage IIc chipsets, but isn't limited to just the IIc.

Most (not all) of the affected chipsets aren't supported by the current driver, and as such should not work at all. However, as we're not happy that they freeze either, keep reading.

There are multiple variants of the video processors they use, on top of multiple variants of the memory controllers they use, on top of multiple types of memory, etc. and these can be combined in multiple variations. We have been able to obtain about 5 of the 40+ combinations, and the ones with problems are just combinations we can't get because they are out of production. ATI doesn't offer their closely held secrets to any developer that happens by for many reasons, mainly legal, but it doesn't help get the drivers done any sooner either.

Things to try:

The only current workaround is to use safe mode VGA or another supported card. Yes, we know, we know, this sucks. But, we're working on it because ATI isn't.

Information we're collecting:

Please go to the support form and include:

  1. Which symptom: Freezing when dragging, won't use color, artifacts.
  2. The output from this utility. Our graphics engineers assembled this utility to tell us what is really in your card so we can work on it. This utility does work in safe video mode.

Resolution:

Contact ATI and using their feature request protocol, request they write drivers for the BeOS. They will not write their own drivers until they realize there are paying customers out there that pay good money for their card supporting the BeOS as well as their other OS. If they don't know this, they won't decide to write it.
